Socioeconomic Factors Influencing the Growth & Sustainability of the Village Movement

Journal of Aging Research Study Overview: “Socioeconomic Factors Influencing the Growth and Sustainability of the Village Movement”

What it studied: This is the first comprehensive analysis of the Village Movement since 2002, examining the factors that drive the growth and sustainability of Villages – community-based organizations that help older adults age in place.

Key findings:

What Villages are: Unlike traditional senior services, Villages are grassroots organization
s created and run by older adults themselves to provide non-professional services (driving, cleaning, social events) while rebuilding community social networks that have weakened in modern society.

Main drivers of Village development:
  • Human capital: Higher education and management experience increase both motivation and ability to establish Villages
  • Social networks: Moderate social connectivity helps Village formation, but very strong existing networks may reduce the need for them
  • Spatial proximity: Villages are more likely to form near existing Villages due to knowledge sharing
  • Government support: Complements rather than replaces Village efforts, especially during crises like COVID-19
Addressing misconceptions:
  • Villages aren’t just for wealthy communities – many operate with low/no membership fees (average $300/year)
  • Alternative models (hub-and-spoke, church-affiliated) allow growth in lower-income and minority communities
  • The model is adaptable to rural, suburban, and urban settings
Significance: Villages represent a flexible, community-driven solution to aging challenges that rebuilds social connections while providing practical support. The study shows they’re not just service providers but mechanisms for restoring community social networks in an increasingly fragmented society.
The research used mixed methods (surveys, interviews, case studies, regression analysis) covering 317 active Villages across 41 states, making it the most comprehensive study of this movement to date.
