Celebrating National Family Caregivers Month: From Caregivers to Community

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize the millions of Californians providing essential care for aging loved ones—often at great personal cost.

The reality is stark: 6.7 million adults in California are caregivers, with 9 out of 10 receiving no payment while covering an average of $7,200 per year in out-of-pocket expenses. One in seven report physical or mental health problems related to their caregiving role.

As the first Baby Boomers approach 85, California faces a mounting caregiving crisis with demand dramatically outpacing our dwindling direct care workforce.

The Village solution offers hope. The 50 villages across California are intentional, caring communities built on mutual aid—neighbor helping neighbor, friend supporting friend. Villages provide vital touchpoints for isolated older adults through programs, social engagement, volunteer services, and caregiver training and resources.

The emergence of “community caregivers” within villages demonstrates how communities can step in when traditional support systems are unavailable.
